Compass Publications has been created, first and foremost, through a love of music. Adam Wilson and Luiza Lale have been performing together in the Spiral Saxophone Quartet for over 20 years and have enjoyed playing recitals, concertos, orchestral concerts, background wedding and event gigs and hosting enormous music education events at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. However, they have been teaching instrumental music throughout that time and are passionate about sparking that inspiration, that excitement and that joy of music in the hearts and minds of their students.

“The MAKE SOME NOISE! series began when other music teachers, perhaps of oboe, bassoon, violin etc, kept popping into my teaching room to ask if I had any ‘cool’ music they could borrow. I realised there was a distinct lack of music available that, as a saxophone and clarinet teacher, I took for granted. This also lead me to look into any availability of books with backing tracks and the chance to improvise for these instruments. We started writing them for a range of woodwind instruments, which has since expanded for brass and strings. Specialists of each instrument have edited them to make them the best they can be for their instrument and the development of the students.” - Luiza

Make Some Noise! is available with full piano parts to download and each of the pieces, for every instrument in the series, has its own backing track on YouTube (www.youtube.com/@makesomenoise-ht4jm)

Make Some Noise! USP:

Our new book series, Make Some Noise, is full of fun and accessible pieces to get young players excited about playing. To get them happy playing scales (and to see their relevance!) and using these scales and backing tracks to start to improvise.

What’s different about this book series?

Make Some Noise is different to the many many music books out there because it is packed with fun upbeat pieces, mostly in the jazz and rock idiom, which encourage the students to play the scale first, play the pieces and then use the knowledge from both to free themselves up and start to mess around with some improvisation- should they wish to. The pieces work well as solos, with piano, and with full backing tracks on our YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/makesomenoise-ht4jm. The piano parts are mostly straightforward enough for most music teachers to be able to accompany their students, and indeed family members at home.

The other USP of Make Some Noise! is that it has been created for 14 different instruments, not just those instruments often associated with jazz and rock. In creating this book series, we have been careful to know what is hard/easy for each instrument and each piece has been put into the scales and ranges available to that instrument at that grade level. For instance a grade 1 level piece for alto saxophone could be in the three scales on the grade 1 syllabus (Gmajor, Fmajor, Dminor) whereas the trombone grade 1 scales would be Bb major and G minor.

All of our books have been checked by instrumental specialists and ABRSM and Trinity examiners.

We have been thorough in our research and preparation and all pieces have been checked and approved by instrumental specialists and several examiners from the ABRSM and Trinity board of music examinations.
